Beethoven’s Piano Concerto #5

There is this hesitation— if you listen

you will hear it — that breath taken

before the hands drop on keys;

if you are really tuned in, you will hear

emotion released through body to tip

of fingers, energy transfered, skin

to ivory — a quick tap, a deep plunge,

a long hold — there is life played out

across eighty-eight notes; timbre

determined by touch; if I listen,

I hear a tempest at night, taste a great

wave as I ride out on a sapphire ocean,

attend a wedding, trudge along

a funeral march, dance like David

before the Lord, ascend beyond

the ink and stars.  All this, if I close

my eyes and just listen.
