I’ve learned much from looking up,
in slow gazes with a willing heart,
like today as we enjoyed cool
shadows under friendly trees
we met during our lovely walk,
my eyes followed trunk to branch
to expansive crown. We forget
or simply dismiss the size of trees;
they become backdrop, stage
setting, but they are so much more.
There is life in a tree; the wind sings
through the branches; there is time
reflected in the thickness of boughs
and weight of leaves. There exists
entire microcosms of living creatures,
birds in their high nests, squirrels
within the deep hollows, worm,
ant, locust clinging to knotted burls,
so many living things we pass
without noticing, but today
I stood under mottled light and marveled
at the largeness of the universe,
the vastness of creation, reflected
within the canopy of trees.
