“We all long for it, and we are constantly glimpsing it; our whole nature at its best and least corrupted, its gentlest and most humane, is still soaked with the sense of exile.” — J.R.R. Tolkien

We leave out early,
pull our hat brims down
when we face the rising sun,
so warm and welcoming.
The birds chatter, cheering
us along, as we revel
in the company of creation
and each other, two together
marveling at God’s green earth.
Much as Adam & Eve strolled
in the cool of the day, we amble,
contemplate, share our thoughts,
cherish our blessings, sigh
and laugh; our voices rising
as praise — joy irrepressible.
There is no rush, no attempt
to get our heart rate up;
this is about calmness
and gentle admiration for all
that grows. Sometimes we
pause to get our bearings—
when you are looking at life
instead of counting your steps
you can get pleasantly lost
in the exploring. Time does
not matter — we are just alive
in the moment, existing
for an hour in our own
glorious Eden.
