What Abides

And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him.”  —1 John 4:16, NKJV

Cleaning the messes —

a willingness to sweep up crumbs,

carry out trash, wash dishes,

fold clothes; it is a desire

to mop up the puddles

of tears from illness, loss,

and all that grieves us

in the deepest places.

It is staying up late to listen

to a hurt told ten times,

and each round you listen

as if hearing it the first time.

It is a vigil at bedside,

wiping a fevered brow, or

putting water to parched lips.

It is attending the needs

of another as you put

your own aside; it is a gift;

it is service; it is love that

abides.

And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” —Corinthians 13:13, NKJV
