Considering Love

More than mere emotion,

not bound by our intellect,

but replete with perfect

knowledge; more than we

can express and just enough

to fill us —undiminished

and full to abundance;

we cannot give away more

than we receive, for it is He

who first showed us.

Song writers claim to capture it

in the summer’s repeated verse,

while poets try to rename it

but find no single image or word;

a child’s voice calls it out

while plucking petals from daisies;

a parent is startled by its clarity

after first holding a new baby.

It predates us and will

go on forever;

it ignites our spirits

and defines our humanity;

it welcomes us at birth

and follows us in death;

it never changes

and never fails;

perfect and pure,

Love endures.
