Chasing Butterflies

“We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.” — Maya Angelou

Sometimes we chase butterflies,

attracted to the finished bloom of wing,

the sweet flutter of refined beauty,

the canvas completed, the masterpiece;

but there is change and hard work

that must first be protected, a growing

season, from birth to nurture to chrysalis —

all beautiful as part of the consummated

metamorphosis, fully realized maturity

finally able to unfurl and give

something meaningful

back to the world.
