Giving, Luke 6:38

“You can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving.” — Amy Carmichael

You find yourself at the end of energy,

your mind and body all give out,

but there is this soul who needs you

to be strength or kindness or support,

and so you push through the tired.

Sometimes it is a little face that asks

for one more game or bedtime story,

other times a friend calls and just needs

a caring ear to listen, again.  Maybe

a stranger you encounter has a tale

to share or requires a helping hand.

And though you think you cannot push

through or handle one more load

or listen to one more person, you do,

and you find renewed strength —

we can’t out give kindness itself,

and our God returns that act,

pressed down and overflowing;

we will rest in His arms after

we have humbled ourselves

to that one more round of love,

obedience to God in the form

of giving to another human.
