We might avert our eyes
when uncomfortable with another
or simply turn away
instead of engaging certain people.
We may let the day’s inconveniences
keep our smile tucked away
and our solemn face
becomes our only language.
We might miss a need
another soul has for connection
because of fear or indifference
or some division in our society.
We might separate our existence
and put up our defenses
because of a valid sense
to protect our families.
We might align ourselves
with those who are like us
and cushion our lives
with the familiar and safe,
and with a loud megaphone
to all those disparate from us
scream silence
and remain deaf.
*May we, like Jesus, go to the well and speak.
