Entering Dawn

“However long the night, the dawn will break.” — African Proverb

I rise quietly, slip my robe across

my shoulders and leave you sleeping,

make my way to the kitchen,

peek out of the small window,

allow my eyes to adjust and focus

on the silhouette of trees standing

still in the last of the moon dust —

morning is about to dawn.

I take a moment to pray, reading

the last two lines of the psalm

I keep taped behind the coffee

maker — “For the Lord is good.

His unfailing love continues forever,

and His faithfulness continues

to each generation.”  I close my eyes,

mouth “amen” again and again,

and so begins a new day.
