There is this calm that descends

with a covering of snow, 

and if you listen, attend your ears

deeper into the quiet cold,

you will hear the slow echo

of earth freezing, trees shaking, 

and in the moment the air turns 

into solid particles, there is this 

barely perceptible sound

of breaking, thousands of ice

shards in thousands of flakes

waking into the geometry of snow.
