I consider the walls,
a protection from weather
and intruders, an allowance
for privacy, a safe place
for all of our things, …
but it is so much more
than this…. It becomes
a sanctuary, a holding place
for prayers and dreams
and tears and laughter.
Joy and the inevitable pain
cling to walls and hang
in the spaces, something
of the truth of a family,
the years of growing
within the walls of a home,
hearth burning with the slow-glow
of living, a place to tend the bruises
and rejoice in the fellowship of family.
We can carry a bit of it with us
everywhere we go, and some part
of us stays; but while we remain,
it is never just a house, it is home,
and home holds our memories
and offers the promise
of everything.
