We talked this afternoon of worlds/ That herd within the sky;/ Of all the majesty and reach/ Of stellar space, till I/ Was grateful to the ladybug/ That crawled across my dress,/ Just for its foolish speckled back,/ And for its littleness.
~Ethel A. Turner, 1921

She scurried up
the side of a leaf,
paused in partial
shade thinking
she had hidden
herself from a lurking
giant intent on capturing
an image, and so I waited,
stilled, zoomed the lens
into focus on a living
work of art, this little
lady-bug beetle
who hides herself
in shadows eating
her fill of aphids,
reminding me
it’s the little
things that make
a world of difference.
