“They grip the ground as though they liked it, and though fast rooted they travel about as far as we do….around the sun two million miles a day, and through space heaven knows how fast and far!” — from the journals of John Muir
From a man who lived under them,
inspected root and limb,
walking among them,
some say for almost a thousand
miles, by the “wildest, leafiest,
and least trodden way,”
coming to believe that “going out”
in nature was really “going in”
to the soul. This creation
speaks to us, proclaims
the Maker’s hand,
His “invisible qualities
clearly seen,” and we
are “without excuse”
to deny this truth, it resounds
in every wild, leaf-filled,
human-trodden path.
