Things We Take for Granted

We took a walk,

as we so often do,

reflecting and dreaming

as we wander

around a neighborhood

we know so well,

same turns down

the same streets.

We know the houses,

have our favorite trees,

share nods with the few

others who also traipse

these paths, usually

at the same crossways,

but however the same

this trodden way,

there are new finds,

unexpected changes,

especially in the spring

when everyone seems

to plant new life,

like this purple bouquet

you so patiently waited

for me to capture,

the breezes hampering

my effort to focus,

and so you steadied

my back — you always

have my back — my knees

not as strong as years

past, but you were there,

your gentle touch allowing

me to wait and snap

this picture, and then

you held my arm,

lifting me to standing

as you smiled, amused

by my determination,

and now I cannot

stop counting the blessing

of your unceasing kindness,

a ever-bloom of your love

I too often take for granted.
