Small Acts

And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.

—Romans 12:8

I saw this little tuft of sunshine

in a tiny garden, a place

I know well, a place that knows

my shadow, and I waited

after giving the roots a drink,

I always like to wait and see

the gentle moving of leaves

and the contented sigh

of the flowers— if you take

time to really pay attention

it happens, those slight

changes in any living plant

once given water, it reminds

me how important it is to nourish

and nurture— plants, trees, people —

kindness and caring really

do make a goodly world of difference.
