Night Watches

When I remember You on my bed, I meditate on You in the night watches. — Psalm 63:6

In the days leading up to the shift,

the shiny hour that chimes

in a new year, I begin to reflect —

What have I learned?

What do I regret?

What comes next?

I read lists from previous years,

contemplate the boxes

checked, wonder over

the ones that did not become

more than words on paper—

the ending of a year brings

a resurgence of resolve,

a desire to be intentional

in how I exist in this world,

so I will be praying for direction,

keeping my own devotional vigil,

meditating in the night watches

before the unknown new year dawns.
