Stretches

I come into the presence of still water.

And I feel above me the day-blind stars

waiting with their light. For a time

I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.”

—Wendell Berry

from The Selected Poems of Wendell Berry

A path, a walkway,

a cobbled track,

hiking trails

and mountain

passes, I seek

passage through

beauty, amid limbs,

leaves, blooms,

and cool meadow

grasses, to stretch

my legs and mind,

to wander and wonder

under a luminous sky

and count the stars

God set in motion

until I drift into

a dreamy sleep

only to wake afresh

and tread out again.
