“Once we have tasted far streams, touched the gold, found some limit beyond the waterfall, a season changes and we come back changed but safe, quiet, grateful.”
— William Stafford

In the golden season,
the grappling-gray
of our waiting winter
must soon begin.
And we will
refuse the bitter
gall that rises
when spring
leaves us….
We will find
our place
in a changing
world.
Among the fallen
leaves, we will
nourish, as they
do, what lies
beneath our
surface.
Content to rest,
we will give back
what so graciously
was given us
when we were young.
