Contemplations on Psalm 139

If I take the wings of the dawn,

If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea…

—  Psalm 139:9

Even before a word

is on my tongue…

before a thought

is formed, before I give

up or move forward,

before I fall into

the bitterness

of less or forgetfulness

of plenty (Oh, God,

forgive me),

You have known me—

my mind and heart

cannot be hidden;

You know every intent

of my weary soul,

and in grace You

sustain me, over

and over again,

with the beautiful

mystery of Your mercy

and unfathomable truth

of Your love.
