Petrichor: a distinctive, earthy, usually pleasant odor that is associated with rainfall especially when following a warm, dry period…

We are familiar with the wind,
the gusts that bring a temperature
change and dirt — so much dirt —
dry, desolate sheets of caliche
and clay; if we had soil,
that would mean rain,
but we wait for that blessing
to quench us and reaffirm
the scorched and thirsty ground,
enliven the hesitant blooms,
clear the air and leave the sweet
aroma that only showers carry.
