My heart is awed within me, when I think
Of the great miracle that still goes on,
In silence, round me — the perpetual work
Of thy creation, finished, yet renewed
Forever.
—William Cullen Bryant, Forest Hymn

One year passes into the darkest hour
as the new year reaches for the light
of tomorrow, and I sit in the dawn
of 2023 wondering what I might see
in this blessing of another day of living —
all the beautiful renewals of creation,
the bird that sings, the evergreen pine
that reminds me of spring, the lofty
clouds that carry sweet rains of replenishing…
May I sit still in the newness of this year’s
arrival and meditate on such truth around me.
