Plateau

The great brooding stillness over and through everything is so full of God. One does not wonder that He used to take His people out into the wilderness to teach them.” — Lilias Trotter

Passenger eyes gazing out

of the car window while you drive

just outside of Sterling, I see

the scrub and thistle of West Texas

bush, dry and thatched mesquite,

the layered pastels of sunset

meeting the flat tops, the scene

I imagine whenever the word

landscape comes up, memory

upon memory of this steady

and familiar road I’ve traveled

since before I was born but only

recently slowed down enough to see it.
