A Curated Life

I want to choose well,

consider how I spend

moments the way

one might select museum

exhibits. I don’t need much

stuff — a few books (literature &

poetry)— I really crave words,

to read, to write, to chew

on their meaning.

I like boots; well, maybe

that is too small a word,

for I’d rather wear down

leather soled boots

than don diamonds

or emeralds or gold —

smooth hide beats

sparkle anytime.

I wear those boots

to walk this green earth,

soak in the loveliness

under canopies, along

shores, up mountains —

all well-worn paths.

I enjoy clean food,

real and simple fare

like roasted root vegetables

and chicken and rice soup;

oh, and bread, good bread,

just flour, water, salt, yeast,

and the time it takes

for a good rise.

I need God’s Word,

some quiet time to study,

and prayer that starts

in the morning and continues

until I fall asleep at night

right next to my beloved

who shares this

simple life.
