Fragrance held within 

these gentle folds 

that I hold, cool 

and silken petals

hidden within 

my enclosed palm;

but such beauty 

is better unfurled 

in a hand 

that is open,

and this lovely rose 

reminds me

of what is most precious, 

the grace offered 

freely to those willing 

to comprehend the thorns, 

the necessary sacrifice 

before the offering

of love’s perfect gift.
