Rain Psalm

He covers the heavens with clouds, provides rain for the earth, and makes the grass grow in mountain pastures. — Psalm 147:8

A hesitant spatter builds

to an open deluge,

our backyard transforms

into a temporary

swamp, and the water-

collecting barrels overflow,

rivulets running

down and over,

a casacading

reminder of plenty,

and I know

this will mean new blooms

and green, the freshness

of rain-cleared air,

the newness that springs

forth when a desert

receives a year’s worth

of rain in one passing

hour, and as the thunder

shakes our home and

the lightening bolts

brilliantly across the sky,

I am reminded of our

dependence, and I sink

into the beautiful humility

of necessary praises.
