No Goodbyes

We had a reception—

balloons, cookies,

a special cake;

we signed little 

notes, took photos,

shared reminiscences—

and as I stood back

in one corner

to take a moment

to consider

how to say 

goodbye,

I remembered

miles are only

distances in space,

across a room,

across a town,

across a state,

so no goodbyes —

I’ll see you again soon;

you are not leaving

my life, just moving

a few more blocks away.
