A Simple Act

“Of all man’s works of art, a cathedral is greatest…. A vast and majestic tree is greater than that.”

– Henry Ward Beecher

The roots have waited,

held, retained, until

we excavated a new

space, mounds

of soil removed,

allowing ample

pathways

for the tender

shoots to find water

and nutrients,

and we few stand round,

shovels down….

we have placed

hands in rich humus,

released our silent prayers,

and now feel the blessing

of earth stewardship.

  1. A small humble tree, inconspicuous in the corner of a local nursery
Beckoning to find a final nesting place
Gentle hands and gracious hearts heeded your call for joy and rest
And settled you in nature’s wise encompassing care
For the joy you seek in a place you long for
Surely will give back so humbly and true
As your roots grow deep and your branches reach out to the skies
And as the red berries adorn your lovely form
For us who behold you near or far, a heart’s desire for beauty is quenched once more
