We left the torn and crumpled paper
under the tree until this morning —
a reminder of an anticipation
that feeds a Christmas longing —
to give and to receive, but it is more
than an exchange of trinkets,
it is the desire to relate, bestow grace,
show love to those who bring
such meaning to our every day,
that is the Christmas spirit,
the surrendered gift, our reflection
of a love that was and is freely given.
