Dawn Chorus

“I would like to paint the way a bird sings.”

— Claude Monet

What do the birds know

that makes them join

the dawn chorus,

silhouettes on a wire,

shadows underneath

a sleepy moon —

they are as primed

to greet the sun

as the mellow

lunar orb is ready

to retreat, find rest

within the light—

that is why I find

morning the best time,

the break-line

dawning, another

night watch ends,

we rise, the birds and I,

singing praises to our God.
