Walking Into October

Early in the morning,

just as the sun rose high

enough to warm without

blinding us, we walked

into October. The birds

sang that cheery song

that seems a release

of summer’s heat,

a heralding for the tucked-in

time of nesting in the warmth

of home. The curl of leaves

taking on the hues of autumn

reminded us of the stark

limbs to come, bare

branches that reach

out in winter, aching

for the spring,

the renewal of green

and life that reaches

down to take root

and replenish earth.

Winter comes to still

the world into hibernation

so that waking

from cold we are ready

to till, to turn the soil

over, to watch the tender

bud again.
