My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and give praise. Awake, my glory! Awake, lute and harp! I will awaken the dawn. — Psalm 57:7-8, NLT

Before the line of traffic,
the sloshing of my commuter
coffee, the tempting text
that dings while I’m driving,
the hectic first moments
when I arrive at my office—
phone blinking with messages
and a stack of mail in need
of attention— before all
of that begins, I sit in my hug
of a leather chair, worn smooth
by the bend of my curled
up legs and the lean
of my elbow, and I listen
to an intonation of cello notes,
easing myself into the rhythmic
motions of the waking dawn,
my soul releasing a thankful
hallelujah, God.
