Pauses

“Man has created some lovely dwellings — some soul-stirring literature. He has done much to alleviate physical pain. But he has not…created a substitute for a sunset, a grove of pines, the music of the winds, the dank smell of the deep forest, or the shy beauty of a wildflower.”

—Harvey Broome

We pause in traffic,

slowing to a stop, allowing

for one-way passage on a bridge

under contruction on a back-

roads drive through Texas,

and I am glad for the delay—

I roll down my window,

allow my eyes to focus

on the mellow-green

grasses, tall white blossoms

before a far-field of yellow,

wild-blooms under a serene-

blue sky — what a blessing

these unexpected pauses —

may I always find beauty

in the waiting moments, living

life as fully amid the interruptions

as I do in the smooth courses

on this journey of life.
