A Loss of Appetite

We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair.

—2 Corinthians 4:8, NLT

He told me over oatmeal

about some news story

—some horrible event

that happened somewhere—

but I didn’t hear the details,

I didn’t ask for more,

I scooped up a glob

wondering if I could swallow

another bite, if I had room

for anything more amidst

such abject starvation

as this world is witnessing

with every story told

over cold toast and coffee

on this, just-another-Friday

morning, but even when this life

seems to drown me in despair,

You, Lord, are there, and I wake

back into a faith in all that is good

and nourishing, the true light of love,

an enduring dawn that breaks

over and covers me,…

and I am blessed,

oh, God, I am blessed.
