Before Dusk

You caught my eye,

this slight movement

as I watched the sun’s

long-lingering rays,

slant shafts of yellow

layering between

shadows beginning

to rise….

And I wondered why —

you had such a cozy

bed, a home of nutrients

and shade, so why

are you inching up this brick,

away from the silken petal

of those purple blooms?

I guess we all have

a journey to take,

rough roads that wait,

our  necessary walls

to climb before our wings

are ready to trust

what has never been tested,

to step off in faith

and fly.
